Who we are

Underfall Yard Trust is a registered charity (charity reg. no 1041863) dedicated to preserving the Underfall Yard and supporting traditional and contemporary maritime skills. Through the Underfall Yard Trust, we aim to improve public access, engagement and awareness of maritime industries within the Bristol area.

Traditional wooden boatbuilding has been recognised as an endangered craft in the UK. This has to change.

Recovery and Reinstatement Project

The Recovery & Reinstatement Project, following last year’s devastating fire, is underway. By donating to the Underfall Yard Trust, you will be supporting the preservation and maintenance of the yard during its recovery. You can also support the Trust by visiting the yard’s Café and Visitor Centre, or by registering for the volunteer team to help spread the word about the yard’s history and its role within Bristol Harbour.

Heritage Lottery Fund project 2014-2018

In 2014, we were awarded a grant of £3million from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help us carry out vital repairs to our buildings, create a brand new Visitor Centre and establish learning and engagement programmes to help share the wonder of Underfall Yard with a wider audience. The Heritage Lottery Fund project was a huge undertaking for the Trust we move into the post-project era in a much-changed and much stronger position.

AIM Biffa Award National Heritage Landmark Partnership Scheme

In 2014, we were awarded a grant of £120,000 by the AIM Biffa Award National Heritage Landmark Partnership Scheme to help us restore and bring back into use the 1907 hydraulic pumps, the 1950s Accumulator and to repair the header tank that stores water for the system. A team of volunteers run the pumps and they are now regularly demonstrated for visitors.
